Steve Micheals, Westby Area Schools superintendent, proposed an after‑school opioid‑prevention program for the Westby district during the Vernon County Opioid Prevention and Steering Committee meeting on April 16.
Micheals said the program would be grant‑funded and would run from October through April, with an evaluation of goals and objectives scheduled for May. He told the group he wants the curriculum to be research‑based and to involve Officer William Resler of the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, who Micheals said has already built relationships with students and would be a trusted messenger.
Sheriff Roy Torgerson expressed support for the proposed grant and partnership. Crystal Knoll, Vernon County Veterans Department director, advised the committee to select programming appropriate to students’ ages and needs and suggested providing safe spaces and resources alongside instruction. Cassandra Hanan, Vernon County administrative coordinator, and another participant identified in the transcript as Dr. Koons recommended researching curricular options before filing a formal application. Chair Martha Olson voiced support for exploring the idea.
Micheals said he would incorporate the committee’s suggestions when preparing a formal grant application. The committee placed grant reviews on the agenda for the May 13 meeting.
