Engineer reports railroad derail, bridge grant semifinalists and asphalt schedule

County Engineer Doug told the Board of Supervisors on June 19 that a recent railroad derail damaged a crossing (the crossing will be replaced with concrete panels; the county will place approach asphalt), and that the railroad is coordinating repairs. He said the county may be responsible for approach work and that repairs could be completed in about two weeks, depending on railroad scheduling.

Doug also reported that cold‑place recycling on R14 will begin in mid‑July and full asphalt work is slated for the start of August. The secondary roads office is continuing bridge inspections and inventory work to meet federal reporting requirements. Two local bridges — one on R14 and one on P‑54 just north of Oak Lake — progressed to semifinalist status for a CHB grant; staff will follow the grant process and submit required documentation.

Doug briefed supervisors on ongoing shop repairs (estimated $10,000–$12,000 to patch panels and $25,000 total for caulking, cleaning and sealing at two shops) and asked for continued patience as crews manage summer maintenance and gravel hauling. He emphasized the need for rain to maintain gravel roads.

Supervisors had follow‑up questions about crossing materials and investigation of the derailment; the engineer said the crossing panels were bolted 20‑foot panels and that the cause remains under investigation by the railroad and state authorities. The board asked staff to monitor progress and return with further updates if timelines change.
