Council hears first reading on airport zoning setback reduction

The Enumclaw City Council opened a public hearing May 26 and heard the first reading of ordinance 28-37, which would amend the municipal code to reduce the airport zoning district’s minimum side-yard setback from 20 feet to 10 feet and allow a maximum structure height of 18 feet where the district abuts residential zoning.
Winston Larson, the city’s senior planner, told the council the amendments are intended to align development standards with the Enumclaw Airport and with the city’s 2024 comprehensive plan. "The proposed amendments contribute to the implementation of our existing 2024 comprehensive plan by offering clearer and more adaptable development standards within the airport zoning district," Larson said.
Larson noted the planning commission reviewed the proposal and, following a public hearing on April 23, recommended the city council approve the ordinance as presented. He told council staff would hear questions and that the council had three options: adopt as presented, reject and continue review, or modify and adopt as amended. No members of the public offered testimony during the hearing; the mayor closed the public hearing and the council performed the ordinance’s first reading.
Because this was a first reading, no final action was taken tonight. The ordinance remains in the council’s legislative process and could return for additional readings, amendments or a final adoption vote at a later meeting.
