Select board agrees chief may run for state office and continue concurrent service if elected
Summary
By unanimous motion the board approved a resolution that would permit the police chief to run for state representative and, if elected, continue concurrent service with the department subject to separation of campaign activity from duty.
At the May 19 meeting the select board voted to approve a motion allowing Chief Town to run for state representative and, if elected, to continue concurrent service with the department provided he keeps campaign activity off duty.
Chief Town explained he would not engage in political activity while on duty and said he would separate campaign responsibilities from police functions. Board members who spoke cited confidence in the chief’s ability to prioritize town emergencies and noted the value of having a local representative with connections at the state level. One board member moved the motion, it was seconded, and the board voted in favor of providing formal approval for concurrent service should the chief be elected.
The board did not adopt additional limits beyond the chief’s statement; members said they expect a clear separation between official duty and campaign work and reserved the right to revisit the arrangement if conflicts arise.
