Council approves water-rate changes; vote splits 4–1

On Aug. 12 the village council approved a set of changes to the village's water billing structure that will take effect with the bill due Jan. 10.
Council member Mike Medina moved to increase the late-payment penalty from 15% to 20%, reduce the minimum billed gallons from 1,600 to 1,200, and raise the water minimum charge from $15 to $25. Council member Chris Healy seconded the motion. The council approved the change 4–1: Healy, Medina, Jamie Hohenberger and Nick Stephy voted yes; Rico Valdez voted no; Jeffery Rothman was absent.
The motion records the effective date as the bill due Jan. 10. The meeting record does not include additional analysis such as projected revenue changes, impacts on low-income households, or staff estimates of how many accounts will be affected.
