Berkeley County Historic Landmarks Commission backs support for T‑Mobile collocation, starts marker applications

The Berkeley County Historic Landmarks Commission on May 18 voted unanimously to send a letter of support for a Section 106 submittal related to a proposed T‑Mobile telecommunications collocation, to begin applications for a new historic marker, and to file an FY2026‑2027 corporate insurance application.
Commission member David Michaels moved to accept the secretary's report and later presented the treasurer's report, noting an overall balance of $4,953.10 and that a reimbursement for Commission member Susan Crowell’s recent conference attendance was expected in about two days. Michaels said the commission still needs an invoice from Rue Environmental so the state can reimburse that expense. Commission member Chris Cox seconded the motions; all motions recorded a unanimous “aye.”
On old business, the commission reviewed materials titled “Advantage Environmental Consultants – Section 106 Submittal Comments, Proposed Telecommunications Collocation T Mobile 7HCH663A.” Commission member Chris Cox moved that the commission send a letter of support for the submittal; David Michaels seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The commission did not record additional conditions attached to the support vote.
Also under old business, meeting notes state that M. Lord waived a 1,000‑foot setback for the Maple Ridge property; the item is scheduled for the county Planning meeting on June 1.
Under new business, the commission recorded a motion to begin applications for a historic marker (item listed with Cem Martin). Chris Cox moved to begin the applications; David Michaels seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The commission approved moving forward on the FY2026‑2027 West Virginia corporate insurance application, noting a premium amount of $2,295 and dates of July 1 and October 1 for related coverage or filing milestones. Chris Cox moved to fill out the application and David Michaels seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The chair’s report noted that the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia conference went well and that County Legal will send a letter to J. Hilleary informing him he is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of his property under the terms of a life estate. No members of the public offered comments during the public comment period.
The meeting adjourned at 4:26 p.m. Commission members set the next regular meeting for July 27 at 4:00 p.m.
