Monroe Council adopts amended wildfire‑risk map to secure Cooperative Wildfire Suppression coverage

Monroe City Council voted unanimously May 26 to adopt an amended Wildland Urban Interface map to ensure the city is eligible for the state Cooperative Wildfire Suppression program.

The action, moved by Councilmember Candice Barney and seconded by Councilmember Jason Bagley, followed Planning Commission Chair Talon Gadd’s presentation of the map and guidance from R6 Community Advisor Tyler Timmons that the council could revise boundaries. Councilmembers agreed to remove several small parcels—notably along Canyon Road and near the Jim Hintze property—from the red‑zone boundary before adopting the map. The motion passed 4‑0.

The map adoption is a procedural requirement for the CWS program that ensures the city would be eligible for coordinated wildfire suppression assistance. Gadd told the council that signing the map positions Monroe to receive support during a wildfire, while Timmons noted the boundaries could be adjusted by local officials.

Councilmembers said their parcel adjustments were driven by on‑the‑ground considerations such as rock faces and a gravel pit that reduce the likelihood of the parcels behaving as typical wildland fuels. The amended boundary now follows Canyon Road in the affected area, excluding the small parcels identified by council members.

The council’s approval completes the local legislative step required to finalize Monroe’s participation in the CWS program; staff did not identify any immediate implementation tasks beyond filing the amended map with the program administrators.
