Coffey County approves multiple road bids and hears equipment-replacement update

Coffey County commissioners approved several routine Road & Bridge items and heard an extended briefing on equipment-replacement strategy.
Procurements and personnel actions approved: the board awarded the magnesium chloride dust-control bid to Scottwood Industries (per the bid terms) and approved the county’s 2026 dust-control program (application period in March; $1.70 per foot noted). Commissioners authorized solicitation of bids for liquid asphalt for the 2026 chip-seal program (staff said last year’s oil purchases totaled about $750,000) and for cold-mix patching material. The board also authorized advertising to hire up to 10 temporary seasonal employees and approved a payroll classification/promotion (CP2) for Allan Soresic, moving him to Specialized Heavy Equipment Operator effective Feb. 16, 2026, with the wage change recorded in the payroll notice.
Road and Bridge Superintendent Ryan presented a history of the county’s equipment budgets and the replacement strategy. He said budgets were reduced after 2010 while truck and blade usage increased; by 2022 average dump-truck mileage exceeded 200,000 and blade hours reached levels prompting an accelerated replacement plan starting in 2023. Ryan described replacement criteria (blades: 6–8k hours; dump trucks: ~250k miles; excavators: 6k hours or 10–12 years) and said some used-equipment purchases have reduced costs for the county.
All motions on procurement, hiring and the CP2 payroll item passed unanimously. County staff will proceed with bids and draft personnel paperwork and contracts as appropriate.
