Council approves $61,811 replacement for sagging shade at Double Tree Ranch Park, 4–1

Jun 23, 2026

Council authorized a project-funding agreement with the Highland Village Community Development Corporation to replace the playground’s failing sail shade with a supported four-post 30x30 sail structure (engineered, expected 7–8 year fabric life) after staff reported repeated sagging, vandalism and safety concerns; the CDC funding is available and the resolution passed 4–1.

The full story

Phil presented background on the failing shade sail at Double Tree Ranch Park: the existing large single sail sags when it collects rain, allowed patrons to climb on the fabric and has been vandalized multiple times; a 2023 fabric replacement cost $12,000 and the vendor would not guarantee a retrofit design. Staff presented alternatives including a single four-post supported sail (staff recommendation, $61,811), multiple smaller cantilever sails ($64,795), or demo and tree plantings (lower upfront costs but little immediate shade).
