Selectboard pauses local fireworks permits, directs manager to rewrite permitting process

Town Manager Scott Pickup told the board he had been approached by the Police and Fire Chief to update the town’s fireworks permit so it reflects best practices for notice and notification, coordination with public safety, and compliance checks. "The Town has been issuing permits for local firework displays. I have been approached by the Police and Fire Chief to update our permit to reflect best practices for notice and notification. While this review is underway, we have stopped issuing permits for local displays," Pickup said.
Board members discussed balancing community celebrations with impacts on nearby residents and animals and acknowledged the town's current permit and form need modernization. Tara Chase moved to direct the Town Manager to draft an updated local fireworks permit and procedure; Michael Schmitt seconded the motion, which passed unanimously, 5–0.
Next steps: the Town Manager will draft updated permit language and procedures and return them to the Selectboard for consideration. While the drafting and review occur, the town will not issue local fireworks permits.
