Council approves permit extensions, notes library board vacancy and pool-heater procurement

The Melbourne City Council on Sept. 9 approved several routine permit items, accepted a library-board resignation and flagged a time-sensitive pool-heater purchase for next spring.
Council ratified an extension request from Melanie and Cody Guilbeaux to finish a garage at 311 3rd Avenue; the applicants said cash payment slowed progress and agreed to enclose the structure within six months. The motion to approve the extension, moved by Councilmember Gaege Bracy and seconded by Beth Opperman, passed unanimously.
The council also ratified two handicap-ramp permits for AJ Polkiewicz and Cliff Tribby that staff and the mayor had previously reviewed and approved because of urgency; the ratification motion was moved by Bracy and seconded by Hauser and carried on a voice vote.
Library Director Brittany Brewer reported that Heather Stanley resigned from the library board; Brewer said she will advertise and solicit applicants for the vacancy. Brewer also told council that Park and Recreation must approve a pool-heater purchase for installation in March and that the vendor quote is valid for 30 days, creating urgency to proceed with ordering.
On parking issues near the fire station, Clerk Mary Pothast said she had received an email from Fire & EMS officers opposing 'emergency responders parking only' signage as unnecessary; council agreed to allow Fire & EMS to determine whether to place 'no public parking' signs on the large station doors and took no ordinance action.
Mayor ProTem Gary Fricke said Jose’s Tree Service must return to remove one remaining tree on Main Street to complete fall removals; the job should total about $2,150 for three trees and the contractor has not yet submitted a bill.
