Library annual report: programs up, computer use down; space study says library is undersized

The Swisher public library presented its annual report on Sept. 23, reporting increased programming, higher attendance and evolving space needs as the community grows.

Presenter Laura said the library's income comes from four main sources: the City of Swisher, Johnson County, the city of Shueyville and the state. The library added a part-time assistant this year and two high-school summer workers; programs rose from 74 to 101 and attendance increased by about 900 people year over year.

Laura noted that public computer-station use has dropped significantly after the local school issued devices to students, while wireless sessions (including people using parking-lot Wi-Fi) have increased. A state-funded space needs assessment concluded the library is undersized for its current and projected population; the presenter said the library has right-of-first-refusal on an adjacent lot and is considering expansion options.

The library also received an American Library Association grant to improve accessibility and has installed an automatic front door. Staff said remaining grant funds may be used to install a ramp at the rear entrance.

Councilors asked about space options and logistics; the presenter described constraints such as Northern Johnson County emergency-switching equipment on a neighboring site that could slow relocation of an adjacent building.
