Lincoln Elementary students present leadership work to Waterloo school board

Lincoln Elementary students presented to the Waterloo Community School District board on Dec. 8 about their Student Lighthouse team and its leadership work.
Principal David Nielson introduced the student committee and explained that members meet regularly with staff sponsors to plan assemblies, family events and student jobs. Fifth‑grader Brooklyn, who said she has participated for two years, described the group's purpose: "Our purpose as student Lighthouse members is to actively promote a culture of leadership within our school by empowering students to embody the seven habits." Several classmates — Elijah, Aurora, Jackson, Nala, Braden and Dion — told the board why they joined and what they enjoy about serving as peer leaders.
Board members responded with praise for the students' preparation and public speaking. One director singled out a phrase from the presentation, "Being bad is a waste of time," and said it was a memorable takeaway for adults and students alike. The board invited the students for a photo with members and thanked parents for bringing students to the meeting.
Principal Nielson explained the selection process for the Lighthouse team: an application with interviews and reference checks, and a cap on membership to keep the group under 10 active student leaders. The presentation was part of the board's practice of spotlighting building leadership teams during the 2025–26 school year.
The board meeting proceeded to other agenda items after the photo opportunity.
