Task force recommends HG Hill site for Williamson County courthouse after split debate

On June 22 the Williamson County Courthouse Task Force voted to recommend acquisition of the HG Hill property as the preferred site for a new courthouse, a recommendation the task force said it will forward to the Williamson County Commission.
The recommendation carried after debate; the Chair announced the resolution "carries" following the roll call vote, with two members recorded as opposed. The motion to recommend the HG Hill property was introduced during agenda item four and was seconded from the floor.
Mayor Moore, a vocal critic of selecting HG Hill without additional vetting, urged more study before committing county funds. "It's no secret that I've spoken publicly in the past about the HG Hill property, and I did not think that was the highest and best use of that property moving forward," he said, urging the task force to explore mixed-use options and pocket listings that a real estate agent might have identified.
Speakers who supported recommending HG Hill said the task force had reviewed multiple properties over several months and that no clearly superior alternative had been identified in that interval. One member noted the difficulty of continuing courthouse operations during a renovation and questioned whether repurposing the existing facility would meet long-term needs.
The meeting record includes discussion of cost estimates: a speaker referenced past planning that priced a 2020 renovation plan at $31.5 million and said updated projections could roughly double that amount to about $70 million if a full rehabilitation were pursued. The Mayor and others raised concerns about courtroom capacity, security and parking at the existing downtown facility and asked the county to consider whether some acquisition funds might be used to improve or better reuse the current site.
The task force chair said the formal recommendation and supporting materials — including minutes, resolutions, sites reviewed and the preservation plan — will be presented to the county commission at its July 13 meeting.
The recommendation is advisory to the county commission; the commission will make any final decision on purchase or acquisition.
