Waterloo Local board praises smooth school start, launches weekly 'Waterl Wednesday' and formalizes text updates

The Waterloo Local Board of Education on Monday heard that the district’s school year opened smoothly and voted to continue efforts to improve family communications.

Board President reported that school staff — teachers, bus drivers, cooks and custodians — had done “a fabulous job” getting students into classrooms. Superintendent Joe said a communications survey of 176 parents, guardians and residents showed a strong preference for continuing weekly updates and expanding text-message notifications. “We did conduct a communication survey to assess the effectiveness of our current communication methods,” he said.

To respond, the district has launched “Waterl Wednesday,” a weekly video the superintendent will produce to highlight school news and achievements and to provide a place for staff and community members to submit items. The superintendent also said the district consolidated its social media accounts into one district Facebook account, maintains separate YouTube channels for board meetings and superintendent messages, and is encouraging sign-up for text alerts as the most-preferred method indicated in the survey.

Why it matters: consistent, timely communications help families manage arrival, dismissal and other logistics and also serve as a vehicle for sharing student achievements. Board members praised the approach, saying that clear, regular updates reduce confusion around transportation and scheduling.

Board discussion included whether the district should maintain the current cadence or expand outreach. No formal policy change was adopted; the board noted it will continue monitoring feedback from the new weekly video and text program.

The district will present follow-up data to the board if the communication methods are adjusted or if response rates change after broader rollout.
