Board hears expanded ICAP/D-CAP plan to boost career pathways and work-based learning

The district updated trustees on expanding individualized career-academic planning (ICAP) from grade 5 through 12, increasing FAFSA and credential completion, and growing work-based learning and concurrent-enrollment partnerships with area colleges and industry.
Heather presented the district’s D-CAP / ICAP work at the March 11 meeting, describing how the district is embedding career exploration and postsecondary planning across grades and expanding work-based learning and industry-recognized credentials.
She said the district has shifted ICAP work earlier into middle grades and is using multiple data sources — NWEA, ISAT, EVAS, attendance, credits and FAFSA completion — to drive decisions. Heather described a living plan approach, vertical alignment from grade 5 through 12, and expanded work-based-learning opportunities that include internships and industry-recognized credentials for almost half the student body.
She noted partnerships with AEA vendors and community employers, and said the district is pushing for more concurrent enrollment and flexibility from college partners when a desired course is offered elsewhere. "It's not the Heather McKay pathway. It's that student's pathway," Heather told trustees, explaining the district’s goal of individualized planning and multiple career pathways.
Trustees asked about alumni tracking and long-term follow-up; Heather said the senior-exit survey now collects contact information for one-year follow-up beginning with the class of 2026 and that further alumni-network approaches could be added later.
