Sheriff proposes courthouse security policy; board asks for enforcement language and flexibility

Sheriff Weitzel presented a draft Dodge County Courthouse Security, Access and Parking Policy developed with Emergency Manager Tom Smith; the board asked that department heads be identified for enforcement and County Attorney Hopkins requested language allowing the Sheriff to deviate from the policy for security purposes. Sheriff Weitzel presented a draft Dodge County Courthouse Security, Access and Parking Policy at the Jan. 21 meeting, saying he developed the proposal with Emergency Manager Tom Smith.
Supervisor Strand said the draft addressed issues discussed at the Jan. 7 meeting. Supervisor Giesselmann asked that the policy include a sentence specifying who will enforce it; the board reached consensus that department heads should oversee their employees'adherence to the new rules. County Attorney Hopkins requested language permitting the Sheriff to deviate from the policy when necessary for security reasons. Sheriff Weitzel agreed to incorporate the discussed changes and will present the amended policy at the Feb. 4 Board of Supervisors meeting.
No formal vote was recorded on the policy at this meeting; the item was taken under advisement and scheduled for further review.
