Council backs plan development for veterans banners around courthouse square

A resident who identified themself as an 84-year county resident and representatives of veterans’ groups presented a sample banner design and requested permission to proceed. Speakers and council members discussed banner sizes, bracket hardware, the electrical hookups on newer light poles, load-bearing and wind-load concerns, conflicts with winter holiday wraps, and whether grant-funded banners may have display-time restrictions.
City staff and Main Street representatives said options include placing banners on the courthouse-side poles year-round (subject to brackets and load studies), rotating banners seasonally (for Veterans Day, Memorial Day and possibly the Fourth of July or other months), or placing some banners along highways and main approaches to town to maintain visibility while reducing conflicts in the square. Councilors emphasized the need to coordinate with county officials, Main Street and public-works staff.
Council members directed the organizers to work with staff (Rusty and Jen were named in the discussion), consult with the county about its own pole standards, and return with a concrete plan that addresses mounting details, scheduling and any COA or permitting steps. One council member said, "You guys work with Rusty and Jen and come up with a plan. Bring the plan back and we've got the support." The council did not set a final display schedule or commit city funds during the meeting.
Next steps are for the organizers to meet with Rusty, Main Street and county staff, complete any necessary load studies or bracket specifications, and return to the council with a plan for formal approval.
