City clerk reports payroll-software problems as audit looms

City Clerk Samantha Wodarz told the Deerwood City Council on Feb. 2 that the city audit will begin the week of Feb. 9 and that auditors will be in-house on Feb. 11.
Wodarz also described ongoing problems upgrading payroll software from Caselle's Clarity to the vendor’s newer Connect platform. She said staff have spent more than 30 hours with support trying to add state-mandated MN Paid Leave and ESST overtime calculations to payroll and were told by Connect support that those overtime-pay changes cannot be added until the upgrade is complete. Wodarz said the city paid for the Connect upgrade years ago and staff are in a debate with the vendor about whether the city must pay again; she said the office may need to amend pay periods from Jan. 1 if the overtime calculations are added after the fact.
No council action was recorded on the software issue during the meeting. Wodarz said staff will continue working with vendor support and will report back to the council.
