Maynard schools approve $20,800 in grants for interpreter training and CTE competency work

The Maynard School Committee approved two grants presented by the district’s director of curriculum to support language access and competency-based career and technical education (CTE) work.
Diana, the director of curriculum, described FC199 (Interpreter in Educational Settings) as funding training and stipend payments so three district staff members — one assigned to each school building level — can serve as interpreters for families and the district. “The funds for this grant will be used to send three staff members to interpreter training so that they can act as interpreters for the district or for families in the district,” Diana said.
She said the interpreter training is intended for commonly needed languages (Spanish and Portuguese were cited as examples) and is not for American Sign Language; committee members clarified the training targets language interpretation and will support staff who are already fluent in those languages to develop interpretation skills.
The second award, FC426, was described as a complement to the district’s work‑based learning and CTE pathway programs. The grant aims to formalize competency-based assessments so students leaving CTE pathways can demonstrate the skills employers expect. Diana said FC426 focuses on high‑school students (11th–12th grade), while acknowledging pathways begin earlier in the district.
A committee member moved to approve the two grants and specified amounts: FC199 for $10,800 and FC426 for $10,000, with both allocated to cost center 2000 (instruction). The motion was carried without recorded objection.
The committee recorded that one additional grant (SC 453) remained pending and that staff would bring further grant items at subsequent meetings.
