Local ranchers urge swift action as New World screwworm cases spread
Ranchers and commissioners described a widening New World screwworm outbreak, reported local quarantine measures and urged state and federal support for sterile-fly production and biosecure facilities in Bee County.

Frank Massie, a rancher and board member of the South Texas Property Rights Association, told Bee County Commissioners Court that the New World screwworm outbreak is spreading and local producers need more support from state and federal agencies. "There have been 15 confirmed cases as of yesterday," Massie said, and he told the court that 14 Texas counties were under quarantines restricting movement of animals.
