Community Health Committee expands backpack coverage, seeks Tri-Town YSB partnership

The Town of Deep River Community Health Committee agreed May 12 to expand its summer backpack distribution and pursue a partnership with Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau. The meeting was held at the Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau.
The committee, led by Chairperson Lori Gregan, discussed feedback collected from families and said it will remove some items from future backpacks and “code” items to preserve family privacy while aiming to reduce food waste. The committee noted that Deep River Ambulance will cover backpack distribution in July; the Rotary Club declined a request to help in August.
Rob Bibbiani updated committee member Jackie Calamari about Tri-Town YSB’s involvement with junior and high school social services. Following that update, Committee member Jackie Calamari moved to partner with Tri-Town YSB to provide backpack coverage; Lori Gregan seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Committee members also approved short-term schedule changes: CHC will double backpacks on June 4 and June 18, Deep River Ambulance will cover July, and August coverage is tentatively CHC with potential Tri-Town involvement. The committee said it will implement changes to the bag contents and item coding before distributions to protect privacy and reduce waste.
The committee did not set a formal contract or funding allocation at the meeting; next steps are coordinating logistics with Tri-Town YSB and confirming August coverage.
