Mapleton Local board approves FY25 appropriations, personnel changes and new policies

Mapleton Local School District Board President Mindy Scurlock presided over a 4:30 p.m. meeting on April 7, 2025 at the Mapleton HS/MS Media Center where the board unanimously approved routine financial actions, personnel changes and a package of policy updates.
The board accepted the March 2025 financial report on a motion by Board member Vince Hartzler, seconded by Board member Kathy Goon. Trustees then approved permanent appropriations for fiscal year 2025 after a motion by Hartzler and a second from President Mindy Scurlock. The board also voted to participate in the Sedgwick (Ohio School Comp Worker’s Compensation) Group Rating Program for policy year 2026 at a cost of $3,160 (an increase of $60 from the prior year). The board established an ACCF fund titled "Tuning with Precision" (019-9011).
Under an inventory-disposal motion approved by the board, several district items were sold or destroyed, including a Blodgett Combi sold for $343.00 and two Pure Air 2000HS+ units sold for $24.00 each; the board recorded the disposal of various food-service, music, physical education and athletic items.
The Superintendent's Consent Agenda was approved en bloc. Personnel actions recorded in the consent agenda included approval of Lexi Mosher as a certified substitute and classified substitutes (Lexi Mosher—Secretary; Stacy Phillians—Kitchen; Sharon Grim—Kitchen). The board accepted the resignation of Catherine Daly as Mapleton High School Intervention Specialist, effective May 31, 2025, and the resignation of bus driver Shelly Stackhouse, effective March 29, 2025. The board approved a limited one-year contract for Michelle Heater as a three-hour-per-day cook (effective March 17, 2025), appointed Cory Runkle as Interim Mapleton High School and Interim Mapleton Middle School Athletic Director for the remainder of the 2024–2025 school year (effective March 29, 2025), and approved Kyle Sloter as half-time varsity assistant track coach.
Trustees accepted multiple donations for March 2025 earmarked for STEAM, Mapleton Cares Day, the Class of 2026 and several ACCF grant-funded activities (donations listed on the agenda ranged from $100 to $1,285.82 for specific items). The board approved Safety Town for incoming kindergarten students, scheduled June 16–20, 2025, and the Mountie Jump Start summer camp at Mapleton Elementary School for August 4–15, 2025 using Title I-A funds.
The board approved purchase of gymnasium floor covers and a mobile storage rack from Tarps Now for $17,653.11 using Permanent Improvement Funds.
On a single motion, the board gave second reading and adopted several board policies, including 1.09 Officers of the Board of Education; 4.01 Employment of Substitute Teaching Staff; 6.06 Enrollment of Resident, Nonresident, Homeless and Foreign Exchange Students; 6.26 Dangerous Weapons in the Schools; 6.63 Seizure Safety; 7.15 Teaching About Religion; 7.17 Extracurricular Activities; 7.27 Post-Secondary Enrollment Program; 7.36 Released Time for Religious Instruction; and multiple finance- and federal-grant-related policies (8.05, 8.10, 8.13, 8.19) as listed on the agenda.
The board set its next regular meeting for May 12, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. and adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
