Mapleton Local board approves fiscal report, personnel actions, policy updates and field trips

The Mapleton Local School District board approved the August financial report, FY2025 appropriations, multiple personnel hires and substitutes, Career Based Intervention pay scales, several field trips and updates to Title IX and harassment complaint policies at its Sept. 9 meeting.
The Mapleton Local School District Board of Education approved a package of routine fiscal and personnel measures, updated board policies and several student trips at its regular meeting on Sept. 9.
Board President ShaNa Benner called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. and the board voted to dispense with reading the minutes of the Aug. 12 meeting and to accept the August 2024 financial report as presented. The board also approved permanent appropriations for fiscal year 2025 to be submitted to the Ashland County Auditor.
Under a single consent motion, the board approved a broad set of personnel items: employment of Career Based Intervention students, certified and classified substitutes, van drivers, a one-year limited contract for district intervention and custodial hires, extended leave requests and supplemental contracts for the 2024–2025 school year. The consent agenda also included approval of pupil activity contracts for athletics and advisors. All consent items were approved by the board without separate discussion.
The board approved a stated salary step increase for certified employee Chyann Collins (BA to BA+15) under the negotiated agreement for FY25 and authorized disposal of outdated cafeteria products and equipment with a listed value of $837.52.
Board members approved several overnight and extended field trips, including FFA Greenhand Camp (Sept. 29–Oct. 1, 2024), the National FFA Convention (Oct. 22–25, 2024), Camp Nuhop for sixth graders (April 7–9, 2025) and an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., and historic sites (May 14–17, 2025).
The board set Career Based Intervention (CBI) hourly rates for 2024–2025. The schedule lists an entry-level rate of $5.22 per hour up to top-step rates of $6.65 per hour for the highest listed step; the district noted a $75 bonus at the end of each semester based on evaluations and classroom performance.
Administrators reported school-level items during the meeting: Mapleton Elementary (Mrs. Swanson) discussed tutoring and mini-grants; Mapleton Middle School (Mr. Runkle) reviewed enrollment and student activities; Mapleton High School (Mr. Kline) reported enrollment and program updates including the MVA credit-recovery option.
The board accepted a $12,500 refund from the Tri-County ESC to fund "Innovative Educator" mini-grants (up to $2,000 each) and approved an addendum for Tri-County ESC special services at Mapleton Elementary for 2024–2025.
Members also approved updated Mapleton Board of Education policies: 9.08 (Title IX Grievance Procedure — Employee and Student), 9.10 (Complaints of Sexual Harassment) and 9.11 (Employee Complaints of Sexual Harassment). The board voted to adopt bus routes for the school year and accepted a list of donations from local organizations and foundations to support athletics, scholarships and programs.
The meeting adjourned at 5:53 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.
