"This system came out in July of last year and it has been absolutely a nightmare," the Elections Administrator said of the Secretary of State’s new vendor system, describing manual corrections to precinct assignments for over 200 streets after the migration. The office reported roughly 13,700 nonsuspended voters on the rolls and said postage needs have risen along with increased vendor charges for ballot layout, programming and site support.
The EA listed recent one‑time equipment expenses tied to new voting machines and ballot boxes—about $17,623.81 in equipment that likely will not repeat next year—and said recurring costs remain for media sticks, programming and accessibility services (audio, braille, headphones). She also outlined practical polling‑place needs: ADA ramps, durable curbside voting signs, rolling canvas bags for judges to avoid heavy tubs, and replacement chairs for staff.
On policy, the EA encouraged the court to study countywide voting (voters may vote at any polling location) and shared positive feedback from Limestone County and a local judge who said the change simplified programming and reduced logistics. Commissioners and the EA discussed contract language for shared city/school elections and whether new security guard fees for polling places are reimbursable by party chairs — an expense must be in the contract to be reimbursed.
The EA asked staff to gather quotes for software seat costs (LGS) so temporary or part‑time users can be added without inflating individual office budgets. Commissioners asked for comparative quotes and follow‑up figures; no formal budget action was taken at the workshop.
