Monroe County ratifies June 18 emergency declaration; disaster assistance options opened

Monroe County commissioners unanimously ratified on July 2 the emergency declaration covering tornado and wind damage from June 18, a step county officials said is necessary to make impacted residents eligible for state or federal assistance.
Emergency Management staff said the State Disaster Relief Fund is accepting applications for uninsured or underinsured residents affected by the storms and urged damaged households to apply through the county emergency-management page or by phone. “The state disaster relief fund is open for applications from people who are impacted by the tornado ... applications are open and they can go to the application. It’s posted on the county website,” an Emergency Management officer told the board.
Commissioners also approved a $10,000 contract with KNS to place dumpsters at three locations inside the tornado path (Liberty Church, Mount Pleasant Church and the Morgan-Monroe State Forest entrance) to help residents dispose of household and construction debris; INDOT crews were reported assisting in litter and tree clearing near roadways. Emergency Management said the dumpsters were scheduled through July 8 and staff would consider extensions if needed.
Officials urged residents to monitor the county website and social media for updates about application deadlines and potential reimbursements. County staff noted the declaration and documentation are important first steps for any future requests for state or federal reimbursement for overtime, equipment or debris removal costs incurred by the county.
