Mayor Jenni Davis and the Sparta Board of Aldermen declared a local state of emergency related to the coronavirus during an emergency special session on March 20, 2020. The board voted 4–0 to approve a proclamation declaring the emergency and adopted Bill No. 20‑004, an ordinance authorizing the mayor to enact temporary protocols and practices for the city during the state of emergency.
