District administrators updated the NICE Community School District Board of Education on operations, student activities and staff training at the Oct. 20 meeting.
Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine said the school year is progressing smoothly and reported that the Aspen Ridge sinking-fund project is on budget and on schedule. He said a Lansing trip with the Marquette County Ambassadors will be scheduled later when participants are available.
Chris Marana reported that the ARES after-school learning lab has begun, thanked local fire departments for participating in fire-safety and prevention activities, thanked Mr. Warlin and Mr. Ward for bus-safety lessons, and acknowledged Nurse Cittadino for organizing a flu-shot clinic. Marana listed upcoming events including Unity Day, the annual Halloween parade and Parent/Teacher conferences.
Griffin Lawson said ARMS seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball teams are both in championship games; the trails class will host a Haunted Walk on Oct. 24; and the school plans a Big Sing and a Halloween dance the following week.
Cliff Fossitt invited volunteers to chaperone high-school dances, thanked the Ishpeming Township Fire Department for recent assistance, and said Congressman Bergman donated four snowmobiles to the power-sports class. Fossitt reported concurrent-enrollment numbers with NMU: Biology — 15 students; English — 40; Statistics — 29.
Special-education director Nathan Longton reported that MARESA provided an in-house Handle With Care recertification training and that a further session is scheduled on the next professional-development day to complete paraprofessional recertification. Athletics and transportation reports noted the WIN Volleyball tournament at WHS, fall sports wrap-up and successful annual bus inspections; two new buses will be delivered this week, the transportation report said.
The district received one public comment from Kris Sibley praising positive developments. The meeting adjourned at 5:55 p.m.
