Orchard View highlights student achievements, Middle Vision career program and community events

Orchard View Schools' board heard several presentations on student achievement and programs at its April 20 meeting, including recognition of Students of the Month, an update on the Middle Vision career-exploration program and a Destination Imagination team advancing to Global Finals.
Jim Nielsen introduced Cardinal Elementary Destination Imagination coaches Gabrielle Stout, Lyssa Cooper and Stephani Lewis, who described three teams and noted the Cosmic Cardinals will compete at Global Finals in Kansas City May 21–24. Nielsen said Cardinal expanded from one DI team last year to three this year.
Middle Vision leaders Natasha Brackett and Paige Lowe described a collaboration that lets sixth graders try short career-exploration sessions; the program currently offers 13 session topics, has had more than 450 Orchard View student participants and shows 89% participation among Orchard View students, the presenters said.
Superintendent Tom Hamilton and school leaders used the board’s One Good Thing segment to highlight community engagement: Brandy Carey, Director of Community Education, reported another donation to the OVCE food pantry and said staff are pursuing an additional grant; Megan Johnson announced an OVEF fundraiser May 3 featuring a Detroit-themed halftime flashmob assembled by a grandparent for students and staff.
The board also recognized Students of the Month from across the district: D'Onna Madison (OVMS), Carsen Porter (Community Education), Jurnee Johnson (OVHS), Myla Chandler (OVEE) and Jozlyn Merritt (Cardinal Elementary). Phil Wilkerson noted that four Orchard View High School students recently traveled to El Salvador to help build homes and support families.
These program updates and recognitions preceded the board’s action items on budget and personnel. The district’s calendar includes the OVEF fundraiser on May 3 and EPICs on May 6 at the Frauenthal Center Ballroom.
