Eagle Township approves $2,500 contribution to Portland recreation program

Eagle Township voted April 17 to contribute $2,500 to the City of Portland Recreation program to support township residents’ participation in Portland’s youth offerings.

Mindy Tolan and Neil Brown of the City of Portland presented information about Portland’s recreation program and the benefits it provides to local youth. After the presentation, Trustee Rob Currie moved, supported by Treasurer Chelsea Hoppes, that Eagle Township contribute $2,500 for the stated purpose, subject to approval by the Michigan Townships Association. Clerk Laurie Briggs-Dudley, Treasurer Chelsea Hoppes, Trustee Rob Currie and Supervisor Troy Stroud voted yes in a roll-call; Trustee Michelle Hoppes was absent. The motion carried.

The board’s action authorizes the township to transfer funds to Portland if the township’s state association clears the arrangement; the motion included no further details on how the money will be disbursed to participants. The vote followed routine approval of the consent agenda and other agenda items earlier in the meeting.

The township did not specify a timeline for making the payment or whether the contribution will be a one-time payment or recurring support. The board is expected to rely on the Michigan Townships Association’s guidance before finalizing the transfer.
