Parks staff report membership surge; council authorizes further review of entry-fee policy

Parks and recreation staff reported a large increase in community center membership and outlined next steps on the entry-fee policy.
The parks representative said membership for January totaled 382, up from roughly 30 in comparable prior months, and that about half of current members are seniors. Staff announced reactivation of the Parks Foundation, to be led by former Mayor Scott Homburg, which will review scholarship opportunities to help income-qualified residents access memberships.
The parks board will convene a special administrative committee to review questions raised at prior meetings about the new entry fee, examine potential family-fee caps and assess software and tracking issues at the front desk; staff said front-desk retraining and a software upgrade are planned to address punch-pass tracking problems. Councilmember questions included whether administrative staff should consider a maximum family fee to avoid undue cost for large families.
Parks staff said any changes will return through the park board administrative committee and then to the full park board and council for final consideration.
