The West Islip Union Free School District's curriculum and instruction office provided an update on summer work and programs at the July 7 meeting. The office said it is offering professional development aligned with district goals and preparing curriculum updates for the upcoming school year.
Staff noted initial review of AP, IB and Regents data to identify strengths and areas for refinement; a more detailed assessment report will be shared with the board at an education committee meeting. The office also reported that the district's Extended School Year (ESY) special education program began July 1 with 39 students in grades K'12. "They were greeted by caring and familiar faces of our special education staff," the curriculum presenter said, noting weekly celebrations and support from transportation staff.
Separately, a summer investigation program at Paul J. Bellew (transcript: Paul Jay Baloo) began this week with about 54 students participating; enrollment fluctuates slightly week to week. The presenter described weekly themes (patriotism, space adventures, under the sea, fantasy fiction) and hands-on activities designed to build foundational literacy and math skills while providing enrichment.
