Nueces County creates ADA oversight committee to coordinate accessibility work

The Commissioners Court of Nueces County voted June 10 to establish an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) oversight committee to coordinate county compliance efforts and prioritize accessibility improvements.
The judge explained the committee will include department directors from Risk Management, Public Works, Inland Parks, Coastal Parks, IT, HR, Purchasing and Emergency Management, with Risk Management's ADA coordinator taking the lead. Commissioners debated whether the entire court should be members—Commissioner Chesney warned that having all commissioners sit on the committee would trigger public-posting requirements for every meeting. The court amended the structure so the county judge plus one commissioner would be the named court representatives and the judge will appoint the commissioner member.
Commissioner 4 noted the practical importance of ADA compliance, describing personal experience with accessibility challenges. The court emphasized that finalized committee membership will be limited to one director from each listed department rather than the entire department staff. The motion to establish the committee with the amended membership passed unanimously.
County risk-management staff were identified as the operational lead and will bring suggested committee membership and procedures back to the court for confirmation as needed.
