District introduces MMR (Advanced Quantitative Reasoning) as Algebra II alternative

District staff described the Mathematical Modeling & Reasoning (MMR) course—now being renamed Advanced Quantitative Reasoning—as an alternative pathway to satisfy the state Algebra II requirement. The presenter said the class is project-based, emphasizes mathematical reasoning and articulation of methods, and serves slightly more than 20 students in two sections this year.

Teacher Kyle Fox described classroom projects used this year, including a marshmallow-tower geometry exercise, regression-modeling with rubber-band-based experiments, catapult trials to teach consistency and measurement, cell-growth modeling with M&Ms to illustrate exponential growth, and case-based evidence analysis where students applied models to fault-finding scenarios. Kyle said the class is more project-driven than traditional notes/homework/test formats and compared it to the district’s computer-science offerings.

The district noted the course qualifies as an Algebra II alternative for graduation, but teachers must complete substantial training (summer sessions and monthly meetings, mostly virtual) and attend recommended in-person events. Administrators flagged the class’s time commitment for instructors as a consideration for expansion.
