Board accepts superintendent evaluation; trustees rate performance 'effective' at 88%

The Romulus Community Schools Board on June 30 accepted the superintendent's mid-year evaluation, recording an overall effectiveness score of 88 percent.

The evaluation process combined the superintendent's self-assessment with board discussion and consensus gestures (described during the meeting as "coyote" agreement votes). Superintendent Dr. Emerson presented supporting artifacts and said he intentionally marked some areas lower in his self-review to reflect room for improvement. "I did give myself a couple twos because I mean, there's 1 that I was like, I didn't do that," he said while describing his documentation.

Trustees reviewed discrete professional standards including governance, board relations, community relations, staff relations, recruitment, budget development and instructional leadership. Many items were recorded at a '3' (effective) after discussion. The board noted progress in finance—highlighting that the district's recent audit returned zero findings—and also identified student-growth metrics and district-wide progress toward goals as "developing" because a formal district growth model is still in process.

After trustees discussed evidence and made minor rubric adjustments, a motion to accept the superintendent's evaluation as "effective" with a reported 88 percent score was moved, seconded and approved by the full board.

The board then moved to other business, thanked the administrative team for their work on the evaluation materials, and scheduled a closed session to discuss collective bargaining strategy.
