On Sept. 19 the Lexington 2 Board of Trustees voted unanimously to add two courses to the district catalog: a work-based learning internship course for high-school and Innovation Center students, and an AVID Excel course at Northside Middle School aimed at students with limited English proficiency.
Dr. McDonald described the work-based learning course as a pairing of a workplace placement with a classroom course so students may earn full credit and have the experience recorded on their transcripts. "That first course is for our high schools and for our innovation center students, to be able to complete their work based learning," she said. The course will include evaluations and a final resume requirement tied to workplace readiness.
The AVID Excel course was presented as an AVID framework addition to strengthen reading, writing, and literacy supports for English learners. Dr. McDonald said both waiver approvals from the State Department of Education helped pave the way for flexible staffing and credit opportunities that support such offerings.
Board member Beth (speaker 16) moved to approve the two courses; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Several trustees urged continuing emphasis on career-ready skills such as interviewing, resumes and professional presentation—skills the new work-based learning course intends to address.
Administration said it will bring course catalog language back to the board in October with technical details and implementation timelines.
