Spring Valley board launches update to long-range strategic plan, schedules community conversations

The School District of Spring Valley on Jan. 12 opened a special meeting to begin updating its long-range strategic plan, Superintendent John Groh said. The board approved the meeting agenda and took initial steps to form a Design Team and solicit community input.
John Groh, superintendent, introduced consultant Drew Howick of Howick & Associates, who described a planning roadmap that starts with a Design Team setting a framework, followed by three Community Conversation meetings in April open to the public. According to Howick, the board and administration will use feedback from those community meetings to shape the strategic plan, with a target to complete the plan by early summer 2026.
Board members chose individuals the district will invite to serve on the Design Team. The invitations are to include representatives from a wide range of stakeholder groups — students, parents, staff, community members, taxpayers, religious leaders, local business owners, public service representatives and municipal leaders — and Design Team meetings and Community Conversation dates will be posted to the public, district officials said.
The board took two routine procedural actions recorded in the minutes: a motion by board member Stacy Schultz, seconded by board member Jennelle Wolf, to approve the meeting agenda (the motion carried), and a later motion by Schultz, seconded by Wolf, to adjourn the meeting at 8:03 p.m. (the motion carried).
The meeting record lists board President Monica Vorlicek and board members Emily Collins, Ryan Glaus, Stacy Schultz, Monica Shafer and Jennelle Wolf as present; the minutes note Jessica Fritz as absent. Administrators listed as present included John Groh, Chris Segerstrom, Nicole Lamb, Ben Lamb and Amy Webb; two other members of the public attended.
The minutes were signed by Clerk Jessica Fritz and Recording Secretary Cristy Peavey and state the minutes were approved by the board on Feb. 26, 2026. The district has said meeting notices and the schedule for community conversations will be posted publicly so residents can attend and provide input.
