Valley County authorizes application for Idaho Department of Commerce ED program

At the June 22 meeting, commissioners authorized Valley County to apply for the Idaho Department of Commerce Economic Development (ED) program and to sign the standard professional grant match letter.
An economic development council representative—speaking while the council’s executive director was away—asked the board to continue providing the county match the council has supplied in prior years and described priorities for the grant application: workforce development, housing, and broader regional resilience planning. The representative noted the council had completed a regional housing needs assessment and held community housing roundtables, and said the council is partnering with Boise State University on a regional resiliency assessment covering infrastructure, water and fire preparedness.
The representative told commissioners the council is using a mix of local funds and other partners, and that the ED program match has historically helped the council secure state commerce funding and support local workforce and business training programs. He urged continued county participation while the council seeks to diversify funding sources, including private and state partners.
Commissioner [mover] put forward a motion to authorize the application and the professional grant match letter for FY '27; the motion was seconded and the commission voted to approve the authorization. After the vote the representative provided two documents for signatures: the formal application authorization and the commitment letter specifying the county match.
The authorization means county staff will sign the paperwork required for the ED program application and the county will provide whatever match is specified in the commitment letter. Commissioners indicated continued interest in regional convening and the annual summit as forums for joint planning and funding discussions.
Next steps: county staff will sign the application documents and the county will coordinate with the economic development council on any required match paperwork and on future grant steps.
