Pine County asks zoning board to study data-center rules as moratorium is debated

Professor Dave Schneider of the University of Saskatchewan School of Environment and Sustainability gave a presentation on data centers at the June 30 joint session. Commissioners and Zoning Board members discussed possible regulatory responses, with several commissioners warning of potential unintended consequences from adopting a moratorium.
Zoning Board members said they would prefer to proactively evaluate regulatory options rather than wait for applications. The County Board therefore directed the Zoning Board to establish a work group to gather information and develop recommendations on data-center regulations. Separately, the Board directed that the previously proposed data-center moratorium be placed on an upcoming County Board agenda for further consideration.
No moratorium was adopted at the June 30 meeting; the directives were for study and future deliberation. The County did not vote on specific ordinance text or take final regulatory action during the session.
