Selectmen cite limited resources as paving request, culvert fixes move ahead

Officials said the town has "approximately 48 miles of road" and that 13 miles are unpaved; given projected increases in the 2026 budget, adding a new paving project next year would be a difficult request.
The Board also discussed a culvert at the end of Deep Snow Drive affecting the Parsons family. Pete Blakeman, who was hired to review permitting options, described the state Culvert Maintainer Program, a certification that allows a certified local road agent to complete certain culvert work without the usual permitting process. The Parsonses intend to hire a contractor to replace the culvert; the Board indicated no objection and supported Road Agent Neal Huntoon pursuing Culvert Maintainer certification.
Why it matters: The Board’s emphasis on catching up with deferred maintenance means some unpaved roads will remain unpaved in the near term and the town will focus limited funds and staffing on preserving its existing paved roads.
