Newburg R-II board approves assessment and professional development plans; hears transportation and facilities updates

At its October meeting, the Newburg R-II School Board approved the district assessment plan and the updated professional-development plan and received routine reports on transportation, enrollment, student activities and facilities.
Administrators presented the assessment plan (dates and testing procedures) and the PD plan that establishes committee structure and budgeting for professional development. A motion to approve the assessment plan (mover: Mister Birdsall; second: Mister Brookshire) passed by hand/voice vote (motion carries 6-0). A separate motion to approve the professional-development plan was made and seconded (recorded mover in transcript as 'Bridal' and second by Missus Wells); that motion also passed by voice/hand vote (motion carries 6-0).
Lonnie (S7), the district transportation staff member, told the board, "We have 13 buses currently, 3 of them is down," and explained that some vehicles are awaiting hoods or other parts; drivers and routes were not materially disrupted at the time of the report. The district reported running five routes and said drivers were “seem[ing] to all be happy.”
Principals and staff reported positive engagement: parent-teacher conference attendance reached 86%, student attendance was 92.98%, and overall student enrollment was reported at 158. Staff highlighted extracurricular activity: FFA’s recent blood drive, national convention participation, a public-speaking competitor, and credit recovery successes including students completing multiple semesters.
On facilities, administrators said they are pursuing a roof claim with Uniflex and have submitted documentation; the district also is pursuing a cybersecurity grant and reported ongoing work at the agricultural building (air compressor and remaining pipe work) with remaining tasks expected to be finished soon.
The board set its next regular meeting for the district’s normal third-Thursday schedule (November 21 at 6:30 p.m.). The public portion of the meeting concluded with a motion to enter executive session and a roll call; the board recessed briefly before beginning the closed session.
