The State Water Resources Control Board is seeking applicants to join the SAFER (Safe and Affordable Funding for Equity and Resilience) drinking water advisory group, which will provide community perspective on local drinking water needs and advise how SAFER Fund expenditures are developed and implemented. Board member Laurel Firestone encouraged applicants from across California to apply, saying, “We need diverse representation from throughout the state.”
The advisory group will include 20 representatives who serve two-year terms and are expected to meet at least four times per year, in person at locations around California or virtually to support equitable participation. State Water Resources Control Board staff will provide background documents, translation and interpretation during meetings, and technical support for members.
Applicants should review the group's charter and expectations on the SAFER webpage before applying. Materials and application forms are available in English and Spanish and can be provided in other languages on request. Applications typically open from early to late fall; the online form takes about 20 minutes to complete and is available at waterboards.ca.gov/safer/advisory_group.
The board’s moderator highlighted several application tips: confirm contact information so staff can reach you if reviewers have questions; you may apply for more than one category but must select every applicable category on the form to remain competitive; and if you submit multiple applications during one application period, inform staff which application you want reviewed or a selection will be made for you. The moderator also emphasized the written portions of the application, advising applicants to describe relevant personal or professional experiences rather than short statements such as “I am passionate about water rights.”
The advisory group has an attendance expectation: missing two or more scheduled meetings may result in removal. Prospective members who are not selected are encouraged to reapply and to attend SAFER advisory meetings to stay engaged.
