Historic district commission tables sign change at 252 Main Street amid logo debate

The Townsend Historic District Commission on July 1 discussed an application to alter the sign at 252 Main Street and tabled the request for further review.

The commission considered a proposal that would change an existing sign to a new design that includes a small floral motif. Chair Laura Shippen said the sign is "very nice" but noted the commission’s rules limit imagery: "You can only have words. You can only have words." Commissioners debated whether the small flower is an allowable decorative dot (as on the previous sign) or an impermissible logo or image that would invite broader branding on district signage.

Commission members asked for the exact rule language and for staff to circulate the relevant section of the historic-district regulations and any precedent. One commissioner said prior signs in other districts had included decorative elements, while another stressed that allowing images could open the door to nonhistoric branding.

After discussion, a motion to table the 252 Main Street application until the August meeting passed. The commission directed staff to provide the specific regulatory clause (described in the meeting as the historic-district signage rule and associated bylaws) and the applicant was asked to respond about possible small adjustments (for example, reducing or relocating the floral dot). The chair said she would bring the documents to the next meeting.

The item remains pending; commissioners set follow-up for the August 13 meeting and requested the legal/regulatory text and clearer images from the applicant.
