River Ridge CDD discusses storm-surge risks and forms resilience coordination

District and community managers told the River Ridge Board that storm surge and sea-level impacts merit a coordinated, long-term response.
Eric Long, PSGRC general manager, briefed the board on an action plan being developed to build resilience over the next five to ten years and proposed creation of an advisory/review panel to guide planning. Long said coordination would be needed with state, county and village authorities and suggested the CDD designate a board and staff representative to assist.
Long presented a topographic hypothetical related to a past storm, saying a "10’ to 12’ storm surge could have caused 45% to 55% of the community to be flooded." He said addressing the issue could take a decade and require funding and multi-agency partnerships.
District Counsel Tony Pires noted that the Army Corps of Engineers has presented ideas in nearby Collier County should funding become available. The Board agreed that Long and newly appointed Supervisor Keith Merrill would assist with the initiative and authorized District Engineer Charlie Krebs to provide help as necessary.
