Prairie Home aldermen review water, sewer and street concerns; sidewalk costs questioned

Board members received a water report noting work with a chemical supplier for chlorine and discussed lagoon overflow, stormwater entering sewers, sidewalk project cost increases and a county grant to gravel Knoap Drive; the FY27 budget draft was presented and two bids for dirt and rock work were declined.
At the May 21 meeting City Clerk Mary Sue Fontana and board members reviewed department reports and local infrastructure concerns.
Water operator Mr. Wirts reported he is working with Hawkins Chemical to supply chlorine for the water system and thanked Chris Gann for daily well monitoring; board members said they had not detected the sulfur-like smell recently. Mayor Jim Lachner reported lagoon overflow levels and asked the operator to check the lagoon cells.
Alderman Ray Weber said recent rainfall likely is allowing stormwater into the sewer system through residential downspouts and drainage, which could affect sewer capacity. Cindy Lengel raised potholes and asked public works to address them. David Borghardt urged the Missouri Department of Transportation to address edging and culverts on Highway EE (Quam Street).
The board expressed concern about the viability and rising cost of completing the sidewalk project, noting ongoing delays; Mayor Lachner said Ameren had been asked to assess gas-line locations for a potential generator at the new well house. Clerk Fontana briefed the board on a county Road and Bridge grant application to gravel Knoap Drive and asked board members to consult neighboring residents.
Clerk Fontana presented the FY27 preliminary budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026; the minutes state the formal budget will be presented at the June meeting for adoption. Two bids for leveling the flower garden and the City Hall parking area were presented; the board chose not to accept either bid.
