Stewart Engineering presents community survey; draft land use plan expected before new year

Andrea Radford of Stewart Engineering gave a PowerPoint presentation to the Macclesfield Board of Commissioners on Dec. 9 summarizing results from a recent community survey and outlining suggestions for a land use plan. Radford said the survey response was strong and she expects a draft land use plan to be available before the new year.
Commissioner Jean Wooten-Jiles asked that the town’s legislative “wish list” be sent again to state and federal representatives when they begin action in January; Town Administrator Jennifer Stanley said she would forward the list.
Town Clerk Gracieann Etheridge and Stanley reported that the town’s tree-lighting event had a good turnout and that Webbs Chapel will partner on next year’s Egg Hunt (Saturday, April 5), Fall Festival (Saturday, Oct. 11) and Tree Lighting (Thursday, Dec. 4). The board asked staff to send Webbs Chapel a thank-you and to provide event dates to the Chamber for promotion.
Public Works Director Benjamin Lassiter said the town’s new speed-limit signs have been delivered and require opening and calibration of components before installation; he said public works staff can perform the installation after the first of the year. Stanley reported that a homeowner included in the CDBG-NR program (Ms. Parker) has sold her house; Stanley will contact the Council of Governments to determine next steps and identify a replacement home for the program.
Other operational items discussed included DOT’s installation of handicapped ramps on the town-hall side of Railroad Street and a request that DOT consider ramps on the Common side, local concerns about tires outside a tire shop, and upcoming clean-up of the old mill site.
The presentation and event planning items were informational; no formal votes were taken on the land use plan or event partnerships during the meeting. The board entered a closed session later in the evening for personnel and a utility-account review.
