Road & Bridge presents Lake Road stabilization plan; engineers' soil tests to guide work

County road staff presented a stabilization proposal for Lake Road and sought direction on scheduling and contractor selection.

An Agency official (Speaker 9) described a plan from Weber Road Solutions that would pre‑grind and stabilize the road using a Portland cement treatment and then chip‑seal the surface. He said the design concept is an 8‑inch treatment but that crews may pre‑grind to 5 inches, then apply cement and finish to 8 inches after sampling and testing. "Once we get the rental equipment back in, we'll go to work," he said, noting he expected soil sampling and engineering recommendations later in the week.

Speaker 9 emphasized the results of geotechnical testing could alter cement mixes or depth and that contractor scheduling and seasonal temperature limits for chip seal (ground/air temperatures typically needing to be warm) create risks of delaying final surfacing into next spring. He also described coordination with chip‑seal contractors, traffic control considerations, and potential cost reductions if the county supplies heavy equipment blades instead of full contractor work.

Staff reported drift removal at Clements would begin under current permits and that engineers will inspect bridge abutments afterward under an open FEMA claim. Commissioners urged prioritizing Lake Road this year if possible, but staff cautioned that weather and unforeseen snags could require postponement.

Next steps: staff will finalize geotechnical sampling results, request final contractor pricing, and return to the board with recommended scheduling and cost estimates.
