County Administrator John Gorton told commissioners that Human Resources Director Valerie Chambers led a comprehensive update of the county’s personnel policy manual to reflect current employment law and contemporary HR practices. The revised manual, approximately 117 pages, was reviewed by the law firm Jarrard & Davis for legal compliance. Gorton said the manual modernizes policies, clarifies procedures and will be effective July 1, 2026.
Vice Chairman Jennifer Snelson moved to approve the new manual effective July 1; Commissioner Gene King seconded and the board approved the manual unanimously. Administration will solicit quotes to print roughly 300 copies; each employee will receive a copy and be required to sign an acknowledgment of receipt.
Why it matters: A unified, legally reviewed personnel manual provides clearer workplace expectations for employees and supervisors, reduces legal risk, and standardizes HR procedures across departments.
What happens next: Staff will order printed copies, distribute the manual to employees and collect signed acknowledgments. Human Resources will support supervisors in implementing new procedures and training as needed.
