Worcester Prep student proposes fall leaf‑cleanup program for Ocean Pines seniors

Liam, a Worcester Prep student entering 10th grade, proposed a fall volunteer program to assist senior residents with leaf and yard debris removal.

He said the plan is to run three to four service days at the end of October into early November, with volunteers from his class raking leaves and removing fall debris for residents who cannot perform the work themselves. Liam told the board he hopes to complete about five to seven yards per day, totaling roughly 16–20 yards for the season, and to repeat the program annually during his high‑school years.

Why it matters: The program pairs youth volunteers with elderly residents who need help maintaining yards and reduces burdens on homeowners who lack the capacity to remove fall debris.

Liam said he has prepared flyers with contact tear‑offs, plans to post notices at the library and community boards and to seek coverage in the OP Gazette and Facebook page. He also said he has discussed disposal logistics with John Viola and is waiting on a one‑day insurance policy to be finalized.

Board members praised the proposal and recommended additional outreach through Ocean Pines' email newsletter so it reaches all residents. The board offered to help promote the effort on community channels.

What’s next: Liam will pursue insurance confirmation and staff agreed to help publicize the program; logistics for disposal and scheduling will be coordinated with Public Works and the GM's office.
