Plain trustees hear library, public‑works and utility reports; audit and election schedule noted

At the Jan. 14 Village of Plain Board meeting trustees received routine municipal service reports covering the library, public works, water and wastewater systems, and administrative operations.
Library trustee Cindy Haag reported a trouble alarm on the fire alarm system that lasted two days but has not reoccurred; one minor fire‑inspection violation was addressed immediately. Haag said a new water softener and community‑room blinds were installed, the director received a training timeline for a new Integrated Library System (ILS) that will require the library to close for about a week, and that the approved 2026 library budget is $187,161.85. Haag also noted that Holiday in the Hills events on Dec. 21 drew an estimated 200–300 people.
Public Works Director John Ruhland said crews removed holiday decorations and have been responding to heavy snow and ice. He said winter pump maintenance at the wastewater treatment plant has begun and that Kraemer Brothers will donate new dugouts; Public Works removed fencing and will demo old dugout materials next week in preparation. Ruhland said he is preparing for the village audit.
The board received monthly utility metrics: December pumpage was 710,000 gallons for Well No. 1 and 666,000 gallons for Well No. 2, totaling 1,376,000 gallons — 218,000 gallons less than the same month last year. Monthly chlorine averaged 0.19 ppm; two bacteriological samples sent to the State Lab tested safe. Wastewater influent and effluent averages were reported (influent B.O.D. average 190 mg/l; effluent B.O.D. 4 mg/l; influent T.S.S. 310 mg/l; effluent T.S.S. 12 mg/l). Monthly average ammonia was 0.503 mg/l (limit 4.3 mg/l for Oct–Apr). Total gallons treated in the month were 1,581,000.
Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer Sheila Carver reported that December tax collections were submitted to Sauk County, River Valley School District and Madison College to meet the Jan. 15 deadline. Carver said she is preparing for the annual audit (Jan. 27–29), that there will be a Feb. 17 primary for Sauk County Board Supervisor candidates, and that new election equipment was picked up.
No further action was taken on these informational reports during the meeting.
